The PCA is a Church of the Reformation

INTRO: There are many Presbyterian denominations: PCUSA, Cumberland, Evangelical, Reformed, Bible Presbyterian, ARP, Orthodox, etc. What are the distinctives of the PCA. What makes us different from other Presbyterian Churches, and other denominations? Today we begin a series, and our first theme is that the PCA is a Church of the Reformation.

I. Reformation History
A. John Wycliffe 1320-1384
B. Martin Luther 1483-1546, 1517 October 31, Wittenberg Church Door
C. John Calvin 1509-1564, Geneva, the Institutes
D. John Knox 1515-1572, Scotland, Bloody Mary, Sat at Calvin's feet in Geneva

II. The Major Doctrines of the Reformation:
A. The Authority of the Bible over the Church
2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:19-20
Mark 7:13, anti-tradition, serve God not man.
B. Salvation by grace alone, through faith alone
Ephesians 2:1-10
C. The Priesthood of every believer (I Peter 2:4-5)
No earthly priest is need or authorized. Jesus is our only High Priest.

CONCLUSION: What is the PCA? 1300 churches, 300,000 members. We are a Church of the Reformation, descending from John Calvin and John Knox. Holding fast to salvation by grace alone through faith alone. Standing on the Bible. Here we stand, so help us God!
