The Persecution of God's People

Introduction: Today is the International Day of Prayer for Persecuted Christians. Such persecution is very real. Here is some information from the Home Bible League: Saudi Arabia; Nigeria; Indonesia; India; Burma. In the 20th century alone, millions of Christians have been murdered for their faith by Mao in China, and Stalin in the USSR. The persecution of Christians around the world has been recognized by the USA government. On October 27 President Clinton signed into law the "International Religious Act," unanimously passed by the Senate, requiring our government to take action against countries which violate religious rights.
The Bible says much about persecution. Here in Matthew, Jesus speaks at length on the subject. What does He teach us about persecution?

I. Persecution is inevitable (Matt. 10:16-18, 24-25).
See also I Peter 4:12-14, 16, 19.
In America we have been safe from persecution. But the signs are it is coming here, too.

II. Persecution may come from all sides (Matt. 10:21-22, 34-37)
Even from within a family.

III. It is wise to flee from persecution, if possible (Matt. 10:23).
The early Christians fled from Paul (Acts 8:1-4).

IV. Persecution should not make us live in fear (Matt. 10:26-33).
A. Don't try to hide your faith.
B. Be a witness (2 Co. 4:7-12)
C. Reverence God (2 Co. 4:7-12)
D. Trust God to watch over you, and love you.
E. Look for the reward (see also Matt. 5:10-12).

CONCLUSION: Jesus challenges us to take up the cross, and follow Him (Matt. 10:38-39).
