Building A Strong Marriage, Part 4

Introduction: Last week we finished our advice to youth, not yet married, and examined two of God's commands to people who are married: 1) Be faithful to your wedding vows (Deut. 23:21); and 2) Forgive and forbear with each other (Colossians 3:12-14). Today we will take up two more commands from God, that as we obey, will strengthen our marriages:

I. Talk like a Christian to your spouse.

A. We all too often speak words which come from the flesh (I Cor. 3:3).

B. Remember that you are a Christian, and your spouse is a Christian, and speak to one another accordingly (Prov. 16:24 and Ephesians 5:19-21).

II. Serve one another.

A. God made Eve to be Adam's helper.

B. God made Eve from Adam's rib, not from his head or from his foot. Husband and wife are partners in life, not competitors.

C. Peter's words to wives (I Peter 3:1-6).

D. Peter's words to husbands (I Peter 3:7).

E. Peter's words to husbands and wives together (I Peter 3:8-11).

Conclusion: Do you want a stronger, happier marriage? Obey these four commands from God, and your marriage will be blessed:

1. Keep your wedding vows.
2. Forgive and forbear with one another.
3. Talk together like Christians.
4. Serve each other.
