Intro: In two weeks I will be flying to Iowa to visit my Grandmother, who will be 100 years old in November. She was born in 1899. There is only one way to go to get to Iowa from Tennessee, and that way is North-West. If you travel South, or East, you just won't get there. You may take a plane, or a car, or a bicycle. You may take the Interstate, or the old narrow highways, but you must go North-West. Likewise there is only one way to reach God. Sure there are some minor variations: you may be a baptist, or a presbyterian, or some other denomination. But there is only one Way -- Jesus Christ. This truth is illustrated in this chapter in Joshua, and the story of the second altar. There are three major points in this story:
I. There could only be one legitimate altar of worship
(Joshua 22:10-12).
A. See Leviticus 17:1-9. Only the tabernacle
altar was authorized by God.
B. The Old Testament religion is over now,
but we still have one altar: the cross.
Hebrews 13:10-12. No other altar is legitimate.
No other priest but Jesus. No other sacrifice
but the one He offered on the cross.
C. Our generation says there are many ways
to God, but the Bible says that Jesus
is the only way to God (Ephesians 4:4-6
and John 14:6).
II. Those who reject the one true Way, arouse the
anger of God (Joshua 22:17-20).
A. God was angry at Peor (Numbers 25:1-9).
B. God was angry at Ai (Joshua 7:1-5).
C. Many say that we no longer believe in
the Old Testament God of wrath, and
that Jesus and the Apostles teach us
of a new God of love and mercy. But this
is confusion. God has always been a
God of mercy to those who believe in Him
and serve Him. And He is always a God
of wrath toward those who reject Him
and reject His Son (John 3:36; Romans
1:18; Ephesians 5:5-6; 2 Thess. 1:7-9).
III. It is our duty to challenge people who leave
the one true Way (Joshua 22:12-16).
A. The Israelites confronted Reuben, Gad
and Manasseh.
B. Paul confronted Peter (Galatians 2:11-16).
C. Paul taught Timothy and Titus to make
confrontation with error an important
part of their pastoral work (I Timothy
1:3-7; Titus 1:7-14).
Conclusion: God has not given us a Spirit of fear. God has not called his people to hide their light under a bushel basket, but to hold the light of the Gospel high. He has not called us to be silent, but to shout the Gospel from housetops. He has not called us to be bland, but to be salt. We are not called to compromise and co-exist, but we have been called to conquer in Jesus' name. Jesus said all authority had been given to Him in Heaven and on earth, and to therefore go to every nation, and make disciples around the world. We have not been called to circle the wagons, but to reach out with the Gospel. Jesus is the only Way to God. All the gods of the nations are only idols. We must not be ashamed of Jesus, but rather we must exalt Him among the nations. May God help each of us to do our part.
