Believing in Jesus

Introduction: Some people have no time for Faith. They have heard the Gospel, and prefer to have no religion at all. Some have heard the Gospel, but would rather practice other religions. In these verse in John, Jesus tells us why we ought to believe in Him.

I. Because of Gratitude (verses 27-33).
His purpose in life and death was to go to the cross and be our Saviour.

II. In Order to Gain Spiritual Light (verses 35-36 and 46).
Some people say they are looking for light, but they are looking everywhere except to Jesus. There is no light in the cults, in Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Spiritism, or any other Bible denying religion, but rather darkness. Jesus is God's Light, and He will give light to all who seek Him.

III. Because You May Not Get Another Chance (verses 37-42)
Some simply refused to believe, in spite of Christ's miracles. Others believe in their heads, but refused to commit themselves to Jesus. True saving faith is both from the head and the heart (Romans 10:10-11).

IV. In Order to Honor God the Father (verses 44-45).
It is an "axiom." Those who reject the Son are simultaneously rejecting the Father (John 5:22-23). God will not allow you to claim you love Him, as the various religions do, and at the same time reject Christianity. There are not many ways to God, only one Way, and His name is Jesus.

V. In Order to Escape the Great Judgment (verses 47-50).
Jesus says (in present tense) "I do not judge" the unbeliever. But He says that the Words He has spoken will judge the unbeliever at the last day. The Bible also tells us that Jesus, though He was not in judgment mode then or now, will assume the role of the Great Judge on Judgment Day (John 5:22, 26-30).

Conclusion: There are many reasons to believe in Jesus. Believe because of gratitude. Believe in order to gain spiritual light and understanding. Believe while the Spirit is moving in your heart, because you may never get another chance. Believe in the Son in order to please the Father. Finally, believe in order to escape Judgment Day, and to gain eternal life. May the Lord in His mercy and grace grant saving faith to all of us. Amen.
