John 9

Jesus Heals the Blind

Introduction: The human eye is a wonderful creation of God. So complex. So capable. The window to knowledge and beauty. How tragic that some babies are born blind. Here in this chapter we have a story about Jesus healing a man who had been born without sight. There is much to learn here:

I. The Source of Physical Suffering.

A. Suffering may be a consequence of personal sin (Prov. 5:8-11). (STD, AIDS, lung cancer, etc.)
B. Suffering may be a consequence of parental sin. (Crack babies, fetal alcohol syndrome, child abuse, abortion)
C. Suffering may be a consequence of Adam's sin (Romans 8:22).
D. Also, human suffering may be planned by God for good purposes, as with this man (John 9:3).
1. Job another example.
2. Paul another example (2 Co. 12:7)

II. Jesus is the Light of the world.

A. He was the light as He ministered in His lifetime (John 9:5).
B. He is the light in His people (Matthew 5:13-16).
C. He is the light in His written Word (Psalm 119:105).

III. Jesus is our Savior.

A. We must turn to Him in faith for salvation (John 9:35-38).
B. We must turn to Him and His Word for growth in grace (John 15:4, 7-10).
C. In these latter days, we must especially beware of departing from the Word of God (2 Timothy 4:1-4).

Conclusion: Jesus is our comfort in suffering. Rest assured that there is some good purpose in the pain you are experiencing. The man born blind, Job, and Paul the apostle are examples. Remember that Jesus is the Light of the world. We must turn to Him for salvation, not some other source. As Christians, we must abide in Him and in His Word in order to please Him, and to grow properly in the Christian life.
