Isaiah 8:21--9:7
The Names of Jesus
August 17, 1997 AM

INTRODUCTION: Jesus is the light of the world. In 8:21 we read of the darkness people are in without God. In 9:1-2 we read how the Messiah would bring light to Galilee. This prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus, and we read about it in Matthew 4:12-17. Later in Isaiah 9 we read of four names of our Savior. Please think about these names with me today, as we worship the Lord:

I. Jesus is the WONDERFUL COUNSELOR (Is. 9:6).
A. Sometimes a person really needs good advice!
1. Doing your taxes; buying or selling a house; rearing your children; marriage problems
B. Sometimes we can't find good advisors (Job had three friends with bad advice).
C. Jesus is our advisor. Our Wonderful Counselor, as we listen to Him speak in His Word.
The voice of the Bible is the voice of Jesus. When you don't know what to do,
read the Bible. For example: Prov. 3:1-12
D. You will need to study, to search, but the answers you need are there.

II. Jesus is THE MIGHTY GOD (Is. 9:6).
A. The Jehovah's Witnesses say Jesus is not God; as do the Jews, Hindus, Buddhists,
Muslims, and the Liberal branch of Christianity.
B. But the Bible says Jesus is God: see also John 1:1 and Hebrews 1:6-8, etc.
C. The point is that Jesus has whatever power He needs to do what He wants, or to
help you and me.
1. Jesus has a plan for the world, and He will bring it about. He will reign.
2. You and I need help, and Jesus has the power to help.
We are often powerless to help ourselves, or others, but not Jesus.

III. Jesus is THE EVERLASTING FATHER (Is. 9:6)
A. Jesus and the Father are ONE. The doctrine of the Trinity is Biblical:
Many verses about it: Matthew 28:19 and I Peter 1:1-2.
B. Also, the emphasis here is on Jesus' ETERNAL EXISTENCE. He is the Alpha
and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and last (Revelation).
C. So what?
1. It impells us to bow in adoration.
2. It reminds us that His plans must come to pass.
3. It assures us that we will gain eternal life, for He has power to give it.

IV. Jesus is THE PRINCE OF PEACE (Is. 9:6).
A. The human race is a fallen race, and the earth is full of fighting.
B. Jesus brought the way to peace with God (Luke 2:11-14).
When we confess sin, and trust in Jesus, we gain peace with God.
C. Those who have peace with God, may begin to enjoy the peace of God.
Note: The peace of God doesn't come automatically to Christians.
See Is. 26:3-4. Peace comes as we continue to trust God.

CONCLUSION: Jesus is our Light, our Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. IT HAS BEEN WELL SAID: Christianity is not a religion but a relationship. Do you know Jesus as your Savior, your Lord, your Counselor, your God, your Peace? May God help us to love Him, and trust in Him more fully every day!
