Isaiah 40:12-31
The Greatness of God
December 14, 1997

INTRODUCTION: Many Christians are seeking a deeper spiritual life. If you are, then you must learn both to know Him, and to know about Him. You must seek Him with your heart, but also with your mind. God has given us a book. He expects us to read it and study it, and thereby learn about Him. There is much to learn. Today we dwell briefly on the overwhelming greatness of God. Isaiah underlines five things God does better than anyone else:

I. God Creates (Is. 40:12, 26).
A. We speak of "creative" people. Flower arrangements, art, music, literature.
B. Scientists and technicians "create" new drugs and chemicals, and machines.
C. Biologists may someday "create" a living cell (though I doubt it).
They are learning so much about the complexities of even the smallest
cell that even secular scientists stand in awe.
D. Who but God creates the universe "from nothing?"
E. Who but God created an angel or a human soul?
F. This single fact, that God truly creates, makes Him greater than all.

II. God Thinks (Is. 40:13-14).
A. There have been men and women with wonderful minds:
Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity 81 years ago (1916), and scientists are just now becoming technically sophisticated enough to measure and prove what he predicted with his mind alone.
B. But no one can begin to think as God thinks in wisdom, knowledge or understanding.

III. God Rules the World (Is. 40:15-17; 22-24).
A. You don't hear this on the evening news (ABC, CBS, NBC won't say it.)
Instead we hear of Clinton, the UN, Arafat, The Premier of China, Yeltsin, etc.
B. Satan thinks he is the ruler of the world, and offered it once to Jesus.
C. But both men and women and Satan are ignorant and decieved. God rules.
(Tell the story of Nebuchadnezzar's dream in Daniel 4.)

IV. God is the Only True God (Is. 40:18-20).
A. The people of Isaiah's time worship many idols and false gods and goddesses.
For example: Baal, Ashtoroth, Moloch, etc. (see 2 Chron. 33:1-9).
B. People today also worship many false gods: Buddha, Krishna, Allah. Gaiah the
earth goddess. Sophia. Some even worship Satan himself. All of these false
gods are worshipped right here in the Chattanooga area!
C. But there is only one God: Jehovah, the Triune God of the Bible.

V. God is Our Great Helper (Is. 40:27-31).
A. God calls us to help one another.
B. But there are times when only God can help:
1. Tough times
2. The coming of death
C. Have you learned to trust God to help?

CONCLUSION: God is very great. He deserves our study, and our worship.
