The Remnant of Israel

INTRODUCTION: We use the word "remnant" to refer to a left over piece of fabric or carpet. In the Bible, the word is often used to refer to a small left-over part of God's people. Isaiah 10:22 refers to the small number that would survive God's chastisement of Israel. Isaiah 10:20-21 points out that this small number are those who learn to love and serve God. We are reminded of the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal, and the 7,000 that had remained faithful.

I. The Church Today Is Like OT Israel--It is only a minority that are true believers.
Theologians speak of the visible church vs the invisible church.

A. Jesus taught that the number of true believers would be a small percentage (Matt. 7:13-14).
B. The religion of good works, is the religion of the world, and of most who call themselves Christians.

C. But remember Ephesians 2:8-10.

II. DON'T BE DISCOURAGED AT BEING A MINORITY!
Luke 12:32 "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."
"One with God is a majority!"
1. Elijah was the minority, but God accepted his sacrifice.
2. Noah was a minority, but God saved him in the ark.
3. There were only 12 apostles, but God used them to turn the world upside down. God promised to be with the Remnant and care for them (Isaiah 46:3-4).

III. The Apostle Paul predicted a great "Falling Away" at the end of this age and gave advice to the young pastor Timothy (2 Timothy 4:1-5).
As we see ourselves becoming a Remnant, we need to:
A. Preach the Word constantly. A Bible centered teaching ministry is vital to the Church.
B. Be steadfast (summarizes verse 5).
Hang in there. Don't quit. Be steady. Keep your head. Endure hardship. Do evangelism, preach the Gospel. Do your duty.
(Rev. 2:25 "Hold on to what you have until I come!")

CONCLUSION: If you're not already in the "Remnant," then you need to join it. You need to abandon your religion of good works, and trust in Jesus alone for your salvation. If you are already a true believer in Jesus Christ, then you need to be busy using your God-given opportunities to serve Him. "Only one life, twill soon be past; Only what's done for Christ will last." Jesus died on the cross for you. What are you willing to do for Him?
