INTRODUCTION: The doctrine of the Trinity is one of the basic doctrines of Christianity. We often don't hear much about the Holy Spirit, but He is very much at work in the life of the Christian. Here, Paul teaches us about our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
I. It should be a PERVASIVE relationship (5:16).
"Live" in the NIV is from the Greek peripateite,
"to walk about." Wherever we
should go, the Holy Spirit is there, and we may
walk there with Him.
II. The Holy Spirit is the Christian's GUIDE (5:18).
"Led" is the translation of agesthe, to
bear, carry, bring along or guide. The Holy
Spirit is like an Indian guide on a remote Canadian
lake. He does more than just
point out the way, or give you a map. He goes
with you, he leads and advises
constantly. He assists in the activities (reminds
us of the word "paraclete" that
Jesus uses of the Holy Spirit). He will carry
you home if you sprain an ankle.
III. The Holy Spirit is the person of the Trinity
who MAKES US ALIVE (5:25).
"Live" here is the Greek zomen, (as in
zoology). He regenerated us, and
keeps us alive in Christ.
IV. We are told to "KEEP IN STEP" with the Holy
Spirit (5:25).
The Greek word is stoikomen, "to hold
to, to agree with, to follow." We are
commanded to agree with the Holy Spirit about
doctrine, about elevating
Jesus, about the correct attitude about life,
morals, etc. "Yes Sir!"
CONCLUSION: As we follow the Holy Spirit, agree with Him, walk with Him everywhere we go, then we begin to experience the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Let us avoid grieving the Holy Spirit, and quenching the Holy Spirit. Then His love, joy and peace will fill our lives.
