INTRODUCTION: Today is Reformation Sunday, remembering Martin Luther's act of nailing the 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, October 31, 1517. Galatians was Luther's favorite book, because of Paul's clear teaching of liberty in Christ. Today I want to emphasize four facts about Christian liberty:
I. Our liberty was purchased at
a very high price (Gal. 4:4-5).
Consider what Jesus did for
us:
1. He left Heaven's glory.
2. He became a human baby.
3. He was betrayed and crucified.
4. He bore God's wrath for
our sins.
II. We have been set free from
the Law's curse (Gal. 3:13 and 5:18).
1. We are not totally free
from the Law.
2. We have liberty, not license
(Gal. 5:13).
3. Jesus said, "If you love
me, keep my commandments."
III. We have been set free from
false gods (Galatians 4:8).
1. The ancients had many gods.
2. People in other nations
today worship false gods.
3. Many Americans want to
overthrow Christianity and return to Paganism.
4. Don't go back! (Galatians
4:9)
IV. We have been set free from
bondage to sin (Gal. 5:16-17, 24).
1. We are still in sinful
flesh, so we still sin (Romans 7:15-25).
2. But, if we walk in the
Spirit, we are not dominated by sin (Gal. 5:16-18,
24).
3. And so John writes in I
John 3:7-10 to look for righteousness in a real Christian.
CONCLUSION: Summarize Four Facts
About Our Liberty in Christ. May the Lord
enable each of us to enjoy our
spiritual freedom, and to love the Lord with all our
hearts, and our neighbors as ourselves! Amen.
